Vic Lee Career
He started his journalism career with an internship at the New York Times and then joined United Press International (UPI) in 1969, where I served in Portland, Tokyo, and Los Angeles.
As a cub reporter, he had some exciting assignments. One covered some of the Charlie Manson trials. He also covered President Richard Nixon numerous times when he came to San Clemente’s western White House. But my story about Frazier, an old lion at the Lion Country Safari Zoo, was the one that went ballistic. Frazier sired a whole lot of cubs suddenly and unexpectedly at what I think was the equivalent human age of 90!!!
He returned to the Bay Area in 1972 when he joined KRON-TV. He traveled extensively to Asia on many incredible assignments… The Philippine Revolution, Hong Kong’s handover, the Kobe earthquake, Korea’s Olympics, and, of course, many trips to Japan where he reported on business, education, and social issues for KRON and the NBC News Channel. His most memorable and grueling journey was a month-long assignment to Sudan and Ethiopia, touring refugee camps and documenting the African Famine and Civil War.
He joined ABC7 News in January 2006 where he continues to work with an incredible staff as a general assignment reporter. Ironically, the most memorable story he’s done here and the one that’s received over a million hits on YouTube is about “Dusty the Klepto Cat” who’s stolen hundreds of things from neighbors in San Mateo.

Lee has also won numerous Emmys and Associated Press awards, RTNDA, Society of Professional Journalists, and Association of Asian American Journalists.
