NBA Players With No Trade Clause 2023 and Rules

Bradley Beal is the lone NBA players with no trade clause in 2023. Beal has the authority to decline or impede any trade that involves him.

It is a contractual stipulation that hands the sole rights of the transfer or trade of any player to themselves. Deemed “untouchable,” these players cannot be moved or traded without their consent.

The recent talk about potentially trading Beal, the star player of the Washington Wizards, has reminded people about the special rule in his contract.

When Beal signed his five-year contract in 2022, they included a “no-trade clause.” As a result, the Wizards cannot trade him without his approval. Only 10 players have had a true no-trade clause in the history of the NBA.

List of NBA no-trade clause players

  • Kobe Bryant
  • LeBron James
  • Tim Duncan
  • Carmelo Anthony
  • Kevin Garnett
  • David Robinson
  • Dirk Nowitzki
  • Dwyane Wade
  • John Stockton

What Is a No Trade Clause NBA?

No trade clause in NBA is a contractual provision granting the player trade independence. Only they can decide on their transfer.

They hold the right to disallow any trade presented to them by their club. If a player has a no-trade clause, it indicates that the team cannot transfer them to another team without their agreement.

This empowers the player to decide their fate and prevents them from being traded without their wishes being taken into consideration. They have freedom in terms of their careers and guarantee their input in determining where they choose to play.

Besides, a player also holds the full right to waive or surrender their no-trade clause if they consent to a trade.

How is it Implemented?

Players can have a “no-trade clause” added to their contracts once they have played in the league for eight years and spent at least four seasons with the same team.

In the NBA, including the clause in a player’s contract is contingent upon mutual consent from both the player and the team during contract discussions.

Before a team can trade a player with a no-trade clause, they must obtain their consent. If a player says no to a trade, it cannot happen, simple as that. This gives players a big say in their careers and lets them avoid being sent to a team they do not want to be part of.

One of the most well-known players with a no-trade clause is LeBron James. He was able to get a no-trade clause with the Cavaliers in 2016.

Unfortunately, these clauses can only be included when negotiating new contracts and not extending existing ones. In September 2022, James inked a new deal with the Lakers, having played with the team for four seasons.

So, even though LeBron had been with the Lakers for a while, he could not negotiate for a no-trade clause in his new contract.

Why is it Implemented?

There are a few reasons why the NBA has a no-trade agreement. First, it lets players have more say in their careers.

This can be especially important for players who have been with a team for a long time and have built a strong relationship with the fans and the franchise.

Second, it can help to prevent teams from trading players in bad situations. If a player knows that they can reject a trade, they are less likely to be traded to a team that is not a contender.

This can help keep the league competitive and ensure that the best players play on the best teams.

NBA No Trade Clause Rules

Any NBA players who wish to earn a no-trade clause must fulfill the following criteria:

  • A player must possess a minimum of eight years of experience in the league.
  • A player must have spent four years with the respective team.

To be eligible it, the above parameters must be met when contract signing. It is impossible to retroactively include a no-trade clause if these thresholds are met while still under an existing contract.

Besides, there are several essential factors that a player should be aware of before requesting the clause. First and foremost is the negotiation. Teams are unlikely to come forward with clauses for their players because it restricts the ability to trade them off when necessary.

Teams typically prioritize maintaining flexibility in their roster management and the ability to make trades to improve their team’s competitiveness. Without this, teams can explore trade opportunities and make moves that they believe will benefit their organization.

Thus, the provision must be specifically negotiated and agreed upon between the player and the team during contract negotiations.

Besides, big-money deals are often added to long-term contracts spanning multiple years. These provisos are not as expected in short-term or low-paying contracts.

Moreover, when a player has it, they can waive it if they agree to be traded. This means they give up their ability to block the trade and let the team go through with it.

There can be different reasons a player would choose to waive the clause, such as joining a solid team.

Beal is the only NBA player with a no-trade clause in his contract, but 16 others can reject trades in 2022/23.

  • Andre Iguodala – Warriors
  • Bismack Biyombo – Suns
  • Derrick Jones – Bulls
  • Drew Eubanks – Trail Blazers
  • James Harden – Sixers
  • Jevon Carter – Bucks
  • Kessler Edwards – Nets (Traded)
  • Mike Muscala – Thunder (Traded)
  • Nathan Knight – Timberwolves
  • Rodney McGruder – Pistons
  • Ryan Arcidiacono – Knicks
  • Serge Ibaka – Bucks (Traded)
  • Theo Pinson – Mavericks
  • Udonis Haslem – Heat
  • Victor Oladipo – Heat
  • Wesley Matthews – Bucks

Bradley Beal Trade Ideas

Bradley Beal possible destinations for the 2023-24 NBA season are:

  • Miami Heat
  • Milwaukee Bucks
  • Portland Trail Blazers
  • New York Knicks
  • Sacramento Kings

Beal agreed to a contract extension with the Wizards for a 5-year, $251 million max deal in July 2022. He still has four years left in his agreement and will make an average of $50 million yearly from his salary.

Season Salary per year
2023-24 $46,741,590
2024-25 $50,203,930
2025-26 $53,666,270
2026-27 $57,128,610

For the past few years, there have been constant rumors about the possibility of Bradley Beal being traded. Despite the speculation, Beal has remained committed to his original team, the Wizards.

It appears to be a certainty now that Beal has bid farewell to the Wizards. According to a report from The Athletic, the Wizards and their three-time All-Star player, Bradley, has agreed that they will collaborate to explore trade in the 2023 off-season.

There have been rumors regarding the Miami Heat’s interest in Beal for some time now. If the Heat were to sign Beal, they must offer several players, including Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, and Nikola Jovic, on the trade.

Similarly, acquiring Beal would be a major game-changer for the Bucks, as it could significantly impact their strategy for securing another championship win with Giannis Antetokounmpo in his prime in Milwaukee.

The Bucks could use Brook Lopez, Jrue Holiday, and Khris Middleton in trade for Bradley.

In addition, the Portland Trail Blazers also joined the race to embed Beal in their squad. The Blazers are searching for a perfect running match for Damian Lillard. There could be talks if they traded off Anfernee Simons, Keon Johnson, and Nassir Little.

In a likely scenario, Bradley could end up in the Sacramento Kings, given he could team up with De’Aaron Fox for next season. Davion Mitchell, Kevin Huerter, and Richaun Holmes are being added to the Wizards’ team as part of the exchange.

Shahid Khan’s Net Worth, Biography, Career, Awards, Fact and Life Story

Shahid Khan net worth: Shahid Khan, also known as Shad Khan, is a Pakistani-born entrepreneur who has a net worth of $9 billion dollars. After coming to the United States with a total of $500, he earned a fortune selling car bumpers. Early Life: Born in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, Shahid Khan came to the United States in his late teens to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. When he moved to the US, he had $500 to his name. That $500 represented his family in Pakistan’s entire life savings. The dorms were not open yet, so Shahid found a room and a meal at the local YMCA for $2 a night. Spending the money made him nervous, so he took a job in the YMCA’s kitchen where he washed dishes for $1.20 per hour to recoup some of the money spent on room and board. This was a revelation to him, as that meager $1.20 an hour was more than 99% of the people in Pakistan made. He washed dishes after class to pay his bills. Success: After graduating in 1971, he became the engineering director for Flex-N-Gate, an automobile manufacturing company. He subsequently started his own company, Bumper Works, in 1978. His company specialized in car bumpers and became so successful, that he was able to purchase Flex-N-Gate. The larger company became the primary supplier of bumpers to the major car manufacturers in the United States, and then became the sole supplier for Toyota. It has since grown to 48 plants, employing over 12,000 people, and pulls in more than $3 billion per year. In 2011 Shahid Khan became the majority owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team. The sale was finalized in mid-December 2011 and his ownership went into effect in 2012. Today he is one of the most popular owners in the NFL. He also owns the Fulham Football Club. In May 2018, Fulham qualified for a spot in the Premier League. The moment that happened, Shahid essentially earned $125 million which is the annual revenue share a team owner makes in the Premier League. For comparison, he makes $250 million a year from his NFL rev share.
