Yumi Stynes participated in a Studio 10 panel as a guest on January 28, 2019. When host Kerri-Anne Kennerley mentioned the problem of vulnerable Indigenous women and children during the show, Stynes repeatedly accused Kennerley of being “racist.”
In an interview with Ben Fordham from 2GB, Kennerley said she was quite outraged by the “attack” and afterward voiced worry about the possible harm it could do to her reputation.
Stynes canceled her scheduled appearance on Studio 10 the next day by calling in “sick” and posting on Instagram that her absence had nothing to do with what had happened the day before. She then emphasized that she didn’t participate because she felt it was not her place to debate the rights of Indigenous people.
She also said she thought if she had returned to the concert the following day, she would have fallen into a trap. Instead, Stynes participated in a radio interview with Kyle and Jackie O, saying things like, “Kennerley has been around forever, she’s like a cockroach, she can’t be extinguished.”
To discuss the argument from the day before, the hosts spoke with Kennerley over the phone during that interview. Stynes referred to Kennerley as someone who lectured her about racism. The press and the internet criticized Stynes’ “attack” on Kennerley, with some calling it “lazy” and “predictable.”
