May Calamawy was born in Bahrain in 1986 to a Jordanian Palestinian mother and an Egyptian father. She graduated from high school in Bahrain and traveled to Boston, Massachusetts, to pursue her father’s dream of studying industrial design.

However, she went against her father’s will and pursued a career in acting. She applied to Emerson College, where she got admitted and graduated with a B.A. in theatrical studies. She has also studied in New York City at the William Esper Studio.
