A Newfoundland police officer convicted of raping a woman in her home while on duty in 2014 was sentenced to four years in jail on Friday, after seven years and three trials.
The victim testified each time, compelled to relate agonizingly intimate details about the December night she accepted Snelgrove’s offer of a ride home after she had been out dancing and drinking in downtown St. John’s.
In like manner, the judge referred to her victim impact statement, in which she stated that both the sexual assault and the judicial procedure had traumatized her.
She is currently on medication for depression and anxiety, and she frequently feels uncomfortable in her own house. She also attempted suicide by overdosing on medications and that she had to leave St. John’s.
Furthermore, the judge informed the court that no punishment could absolve the lady of her tragedy or its aftermath.
