West is one of seven children born to Pauline Mary, an actress and her husband Thomas George Eagleton West, who was the owner of a plastics factory. Dominic was a student at Eton College, and then graduated from Trinity College, Dublin with a BA in English literature. After that he attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from which he graduated in 1995.

From a young age, Dominic was interested in acting, and started to appear in community theatre when he was only nine years old, and as he got older his interest intensified. Dominic made an acting debut in the short film “3 Joes” in 1991, and four years later had his first role in a feature film, as the Earl of Richmond in Richard Loncraine`s Oscar-nominated “Richard III” (1995) with Ian McKellen and Annette Bening. Throughout the `90s, Dominic appeared in such productions as “Surviving Picasso” (1996) as Paulo Picasso, “The Gambler” (1997), and “A Midsummer Night`s Dream” (1999), directed by Michael Hoffman.

He began the new millennium with the role of Jasper in the film “28 Days” (2000), and in 2001 had roles in “The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickelby” and “Rock Star”, which only increased his net worth.

2002 was quite successful for Dominic, as he was selected for the role of Det. James “Jimmy” McNulty in the TV series “The Wire” (2002-2008) and had a supporting role in the Bob Marshal`s “Chicago”, which won six Oscars, and starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere. Four years later, Dominic was selected for the role of Theron in Zack Snyder`s successful accomplishment “300” with Gerard Butler and Lena Headey, which only added a substantial amount to his net worth. In 2007 he appeared in “Hannibal Rising” (2007), and the next year featured in “Punisher: War Zone”. He started the `10s with the role of General Titus Flavius Virilus in the film “Centurion”, and continued successfully with appearances in “Appropriate Adult” (2011), “The Awakening” (2011), with Rebeca Hall, and “John Carter” (2012), starring Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins. He also portrayed serial killer Fred West in “Appropriate Adult” – even acclaimed by the subject’s daughter, and for which Dominic won a BAFTA TV Award in the category Best Leading Actor.

Since 2014 Dominic has been a part of the TV series “The Affair” (2014-2017), as Noah Solloway, and also in 2014 had roles in “Testament of Youth” with Kit Harrington and Alicia Vikander in lead roles, and “Pride” with Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton.

To speak further of his accomplishments, Dominic appeared in the film “Genius” (2016) portraying English novelist Ernest Hemingway, alongside Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman, and also featured in the film “Money Monster” (2016), increasing further his net worth.

Thanks to his skills, Dominic has received numerous prestigious nominations and awards, including two Golden Globe Award nominations, firstly for his work on the TV series “Affair” in category Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series Drama – receiving a Satellite Award Best Actor in a Series – and secondly for the TV series “The Hour” in category Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Regarding his personal life, Dominic has been married to film producer Catherine Fitzgerald since 2010; the couple has three children. Also, Dominic has a daughter with Polly Astor, whom he dated in 1998.

Quote
1 I think I’ve got a funny face.
2 I went to America to get away from constantly being cast in costume dramas, playing posh people.
3 I’m a rather crude cook.
4 I’ve always wanted to play more comic parts.
5 I mean, I think women should be more indulgent of affairs. I really do. It’s daft to kick someone out over a fling. Isn’t it? Everyone should turn a blind eye to men’s behavior between the ages of 40 and 50. Let it all blow over.
6 My mum’s parents were from Ireland, my dad’s mum was American-Irish.
7 I like to believe there are ghosts all over the place!
8 Apparently it’ll all settle down and they’ll forget about it soon.
9 Prince Charles is the best-dressed man in the world.
10 No, I don’t think The Wire (2002) screwed up my career at all.
11 I’m only stopped by people in uniform, whether it’s customs people, janitors, or the FBI – they all watch The Wire (2002). Sadly, beautiful, glamorous women don’t know anything about it.
12 If you do an American TV series, before the audition you sign away the next five years of your life.
13 I look ridiculous in a three-piece suit – I’m too fat.
14 Since I got married my wife doesn’t really let me wear anything that I used to because she says I have no taste at all.
15 It would have been an interesting run if we hadn’t gotten along! It was good casting, I suppose.
16 For a straight man, I seem to have to kiss an awful lot of men!
17 The kiss always gets a hell of a reaction.
18 People seem to think I’m Satan.
19 I’ve hung out at dozens of playgrounds, bored out of my mind, with not even a look of comfort from disapproving mothers all around me. Either they think I’m a pedophile or a deadbeat dad. That’s what I get for being a single dad – suspicious looks at the playground.
20 You’ve got to grab every opportunity that comes up.
21 If you turn on American TV, there’s a huge choice of nothing you want to see and, unfortunately, I think that’s the case here now as well. I love costume drama, no-one does it like the BBC – no-one has the money to do it, first of all and, secondly, Americans don’t have the history to do it. So we do it brilliantly but if you talk to any BBC producers, they abhor the fact… they’re dying to do The Wire (2002) and hate doing Cranford (2007) . I thought Cranford (2007) was incredible but we don’t seem to be able to do contemporary stuff.
22 [on Mona Lisa Smile (2003)] The movie didn’t make much sense. We would be given new scenes to film out of the blue which, it transpired, had been written by Julia’s agent, who was doubling as a producer. I don’t know what anyone was doing there. No one seemed to enjoy it. Especially not Julia. She had just got married and just wanted to be off having sex with her husband. Trouble was, she had married the cameraman on the movie. You can’t really relax in a sex scene when the husband is staring right at you.
23 [on The Wire (2002)] The show provokes a kind of obsessive following. Those who love it kind of cherish the fact that it’s not quite as world-renowned as The Sopranos (1999). It’s like being in a secret club.
24 I went to America to get away from constantly being cast in costume dramas, playing posh people. It’s interesting that I’ve been cast as a working-class cop [The Wire (2002)] because I doubt that would happen at home. The films I most enjoy in England are by Mike Leigh and Ken Loach, but it’s very unlikely I would be cast in them; I’ve tried a few times, but I’m perceived as posh.
25 I don’t know why British actors are getting big parts in American TV shows. Maybe it’s because we’re cheap.
Fact

The only previous movie, Royal Flash (1975) was not a success and was so disliked by Fraser that he would not allow another one to be made in his lifetime.

8 Graduated from Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1995.
9 Once spent four months as a cattle herder in Argentina in 1988 trying to be “different.” Afterwards he enrolled at Dublin’s Trinity College, graduating in 1993 with a B.A. in English literature.

11 Was one of seven children – five girls, two boys – born to George and Moya West – his parents divorced in 1996.
