Benjie Arnold, a Texas teacher, has reached a settlement with a student whom he forced to write out the Pledge of Allegiance.
A former Texas high school student was awarded a $90,000 settlement after claiming that a teacher had harassed her for sitting during the pledge of allegiance.
According to American Atheists, which represented the student, Mari Oliver, the teacher consented to the deal.
Who is Benjie Arnold? Texas Teacher Lawsuit Settled With Mari Oliver
Benjie Arnold, a 12th-grade sociology teacher at Klein Oak High School in Harris County, roughly 30 miles north of Houston, is accused of forcing students to write the Pledge of Allegiance.
Arnold’s student, Oliver, filed a lawsuit against him and the school in 2017, according to court filings.
She was “harassed, punished, and retaliated against for not participating in the Pledge of Allegiance,” according to American Atheists.
According to the Texas Education Code, during the one-minute commitment, each student may “reflect, pray, meditate, or engage in any other silent activity that is not likely to interfere with or distract another student.”
Despite the law, American Atheists said that Arnold “singled her out” and “retaliated against her for refusing to take the vow.”
Arnold also went on a long rant, offering to pay pupils to emigrate to Europe if they didn’t like living in America, according to the report.
As part of the settlement, the Texas Association of School Boards, a risk pool funded by school districts across the state, agreed to pay $90,000 to settle the matter before it went to trial.
