Where Is Tim Donaghy Now? Facts About ‘Untold’ Movie On The Former NBA Referee

The Netflix sports documentary series Untold has the episode “The Operation Flagrant Foul,” which examines significant global sporting occurrences from recent history.

Similarly, the most recent episode focuses on former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who spent years working in the top tier of American basketball before spectacularly falling from favor.

The NBA employed Tim Donaghy, a 55-year-old former Pennsylvanian basketball official, from 1994 to 2007.

Donaghy had a loving wife and a respectable profession dealing with American sports stars, but all of that was gone when he was jailed for gambling on games he officiated.

Where Is Tim Donaghy Now?

The documentary demonstrates that Donaghy still leads a luxurious lifestyle. The convicted referee required work to support himself and his four children after being released from prison in 2009.

In 2021, he ironically worked as a sports-picks salesman, rehab counselor, and referee for Major League Wrestling. He currently invests in real estate and rents out houses.

Per BVM Sports, he continues to be among the most despised individuals in NBA history because Donaghy will always be associated with the phrase “cheating NBA referees.”

It comes as no surprise that he avoids being active on public social media after receiving several death threats. Donaghy is attempting to alter the narrative of his life through this documentary and other recent appearances.

Further, he claims that people should question the integrity of those in authority in the NBA and wants people to think that the NBA itself is more at fault.

Former NBA Referee Sentenced To 15 Months Jail Time For Gambling

Tim Donaghy, a former NBA official, was at the core of a gambling scandal 15 years ago that rocked the league.

Netflix is now revisiting the infamous incident that shook the sports industry in the late 2000s in an episode of its documentary series Untold.

In July 2007, Donaghy left the NBA amid reports that the FBI was looking into his role. The following year, he was given a 15-month federal jail sentence for accepting cash from a seasoned gambler in return for insider knowledge about injuries and games.

The NBA, according to Donaghy, encouraged officials to call infractions that affected game outcomes, and he publicly admitted in court to having a gambling addiction. For many years, the league’s reputation was damaged by his allegations and the scandal.

Moreover, about his part in Personal Foul, Donaghy published a book in 2009.

What Happened Tim Donaghy In Prison?

According to Bleacher Report, a fellow prisoner battered Donaghy so severely that he required surgery in November 2008; a prisoner with “mob ties.”

His gambling buddies were allegedly connected to the mafia. Even the FBI made no mention of these links. It’s common for the mob to control illegal sports gambling, which includes the friendly neighborhood bookmaker.

It is also one of the mafia’s most lucrative businesses, with billions of dollars illegally wagered on athletic events each year.

In reality, it is common knowledge that the mafia has historically been responsible for several collegiate basketball fixations and controversies involving point-shaving.

Even if there hasn’t been significant exposure to such activities, it would be irrational to think that this hasn’t occurred on a professional level.

His 12 Years Of Marriage To His Wife Kimberly Donaghy Ended In Divorce

Donaghy and his wife Kimberly exchanged vows in 1995, but shortly after the controversy he was involved in came to light, their 12 years of marriage ended in divorce.

The couple gave birth to four kids throughout the course of their 12-year relationship.

Kimberly Donaghy stated that she wanted a judge to decide the matter to divide the money from the sale of the Donaghys’ Lakewood Ranch property on a golf course.

In contrast, the TMZ article claims that Donaghy had cause to suspect that his daughter was using drugs at a neighboring house with a friend.

He made the decision to take her home out of parental protection. He also made the unstated decision to bring a hammer with him.

When Donaghy got there, he and his daughter got into a fight outdoors. A guy approached Donaghy during the altercation, saying that he brandished the hammer and warned him to use it if the man got any closer.
