Out of the popular crafting hobbies, Crocheting and knitting have a significant place. They not only enhance creativity but also is fun and relaxing for the mind. Both of them are quite similar kinds of craft but the techniques and tools used in them are different.
Crocheting vs Knitting
The main difference between Crocheting and knitting is that in crocheting a single hook is used To directly hook all the loops together on the piece. On the other hand in knitting, loops are made using long needles, and the set of loops are moved from one needle to another, making the stitches to be held on the needle itself.
In crocheting various types of stitches can be used. These stitches can only be formed one at a time. This technique very well eliminates the requirement of holding the active needles on the hook of the crochet. The stitches used in crocheting are very intricate, but comparatively can be performed much faster than that of knitting.
Knitting on the other hand consists of two types of stitches, knitting, and purling. These stitches are mixed and matched in a variety of ways so that a wide range of patterns and stitches are formed. The knitting needle holds the active stitches and the Stitches here are formed in rows.
Comparison Table Between Crocheting and Knitting
What is Crocheting?
In Crocheting, the hook that is used is very much different from a knitting needle. Here a special type of hook is used which has a type of handle in of its ends and on the other end, there is the hook. In Crocheting, four patterns are used. These are chain, single crochet, double crochet, and half double crochet. Crocheting can be done by just using one of these patterns or one can use a combination of these four patterns too. The fabric produced in Crocheting is generally less stretchy but is bumpier than the fabric which is produced in knitting. This is because in crocheting the stitches look very similar to a chain made of small knots.
Advantages of Crocheting:
- It has very less chances of unraveling by mistake. This is one of the biggest benefits of Crocheting.
- A lesser number of tools are used thus making it easier to deal with.
- Most people find Crocheting easier than knitting.
- It is more suited for blankets because of its stiff nature.
Disadvantages of Crocheting:
- Crocheting can become expensive cause it uses more yarn than knitting uses.
- The patterns are not readily available like that which is available for knitting.
What is Knitting?
In knitting, two pointed needles and yarn are used. These needles are sometimes joined by a loop of wire, thus preventing the stitches from being dropped. These needles that are used are usually made from wood, bamboo, plastic, or aluminum and come in different sizes. The yarns are usually wool, synthetic, or cotton.
In knitting, the stitches are created by looping up the yarn around the needle in a particular pattern. By combining the two basic types of knitting that are plain and purl, various designs can be created. The combination of these stitches usually gives rise to very stretchy fabric.
Advantages of knitting:
- The items that are made out of knitting are usually stretchy but also depend on the pattern of knitting used.
- A wide variety of knitting patterns are available for making advanced stitches.
- When done with great care, the result can look quite expensive.
- Usually, knitted items are much aesthetically pleasing.
Disadvantages of knitting:
- The main problem in knitting is the dropping stitches. This can usually create a mess if not dealt with properly.
- Some people have a problem with knitting sounds.
- Knitting is a time-consuming process and requires a lot of patience.
Main Differences Between Crocheting and Knitting
- A crochet hook is used in crocheting while a knitting needle is used in knitting.
- Crocheting results in a fabric that is heavier and thicker while Knitting results in a fabric that is lighter and thinner.
- Crocheting is faster compared to knitting.
- Crocheting requires comparatively more yarn than that required in knitting.
- In crocheting one stitch is closed before moving to another but in knitting, multiple stitches remain open.
- Crocheting is much easier than knitting.
- Crocheting requires lesser tools than knitting.
- Crocheting has a lesser chance of unraveling by mistake than knitting.
Conclusion
In many ways, Crocheting and knitting are pretty much the same things. In most cases, the yarn that is used in crocheting can be used for knitting as well. But when it comes to thread Knitting it becomes very difficult and is best suited for Crocheting only. Although earlier said that Crocheting is easier than knitting, there can never be a conclusion to this point since it is completely dependent on personal preference and practice. Usually, the method learned first becomes easier for the individual. There also exists a huge debate about whether Crocheting requires more yarn than knitting and which one is faster.
