Walter Wolf (born October 5, 1939) is a Canadian oil-drilling equipment provider who earned a fortune in the North Sea oil industry in the early 1970s and chose to enter Formula One (F1) racing. Wolf was born in the Austrian city of Graz. His mother was a Lower Styrian Slovene, while his father was an Austrian. The family relocated to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after the Anschluss. Wolf grew up in the Slovenian city of Maribor. The family relocated to Wuppertal, West Germany, when his father returned from a Soviet military detention camp in 1951. They relocated to Canada in 1958. Wolf rose to prominence as a businessman in Canada. His finances initially aided Frank Williams’ nascent Formula
One team, but Williams departed in 1977 to establish Williams Grand Prix Engineering (eventually the Williams F1) team. Wolf’s team was renamed Walter Wolf Racing and went on to win three Formula One Grands Prix until being shut down in 1979. Wolf assisted in the financing of the failed US Fire Apparatus business Firewolf Industries, which was based in a former Piper Aircraft plant near Lakeland, Florida. L. Christian Mixon, an actor and vintage automobile enthusiast, temporarily worked as a sales manager for this business in 1993. The Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame inducted Walter Wolf in 1998. He was implicated in the Patria affair, a corruption scandal involving the Finnish firm Patria, in 2008. The investigative show MOT of the Finnish broadcaster YLE claimed that he was a terrorist.
