What was your most memorable weather event?
There are several that come to mind, but at the top of the list has to be Hurricane Irma. I had just started working at my new station in Tampa about a month before the storm.
We were on the air for over 55 straight hours. Thankfully, most of our viewing area faired okay, but a storm of that magnitude is one that folks around here will remember for decades to come. A storm like Irma is one that reminds us as meteorologists how incredibly important the work that we do really is.
What is your favorite and least favorite type of weather?
I’m a sucker for a good snowstorm. Summer thunderstorms in Florida are a close second, but put me in a small mountain town out West, and dump a couple of feet of fresh powder – I’m in my happy place.
Least favorite is windy weather. The wind just ruins everything.
If you weren’t a meteorologist what would you most like to be?
Professional golfer. I’d have to start shooting better than a 96, though.
From a purely meteorological point of view, where would you most like to live?
I love living near the beach, but still like to have a taste of all four seasons. The Outer Banks of North Carolina has always been one of my favorite spots. Be sure to put it on your list, if you’ve never been!
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I truly love what I do. Life is too short to do something you don’t love. Find whatever it is that makes you happy and never look back!

Tropical Storm Barry Forms In The Gulf; Expected To Cause Major Flooding
11 am Thursday: Tropical Storm Barry has now formed about 95 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It is expected to slowly strengthen over the next 36 hours or so as environmental conditions become more favorable. Current intensity forecast from the National Hurricane Center has Barry becoming a category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph prior to landfall.
Regardless of whether or not this intensity forecast comes to fruition, Barry will create a dangerous flooding threat across much of the lower Mississippi Valley over the weekend into early next week.
The Mississippi is already swollen from springtime floodwaters flowing south, as well as recent heavy rains. Adding to that, a swath of 10-20″ of rain is expected to fall across southern Louisiana and parts of Mississippi over the next few days.
This could be a particularly dangerous situation in places like New Orleans. Along the Mississippi, Levees protect to an average of 20 feet in the city.
Current forecast river height in this area is 19 feet by Saturday night. Levees will be tested and there is likely to be water spilling over in some areas.
This heat is poetic’: Florida Man Goes On a Hilarious Rant About Summer Heat
NAPLES, Fla. (FOX 13) – It’s hot – even for Floridians.
Josh Pray, a native Floridian living in Naples, agrees and gave a hilariously honest take about the triple-digit heat indexes in the Sunshine State – while also wondering what Floridians did to upset the sun.
“I apologize to your Sun. I don’t know what we did to you,” he said. “I’m so weak.”
His rant was all recorded in a Facebook video, posted on his social media account. He told FOX 13 he was inspired to do the video because, well, it’s “hot beyond belief.”
“It’s Easy Baker oven-hot outside,” he described. “You know how you put a Jamaican patty in the microwave and it gets too hot? Every time I walk outside, I get crispier.”
Josh said the heat is “poetic” and could be something even written by “Dr. Seuss.”
“Hippity hoppity boop. The sun is hotter than anything in a chicken coop,” he said.
Josh made sure to mention how hard air conditioners are running in his home, saying “my bill is going to be so high because I got it on 63.”
A heat advisory was issued Wednesday for most of Tampa Bay. Heat indexes are forecasted to be as high as 110 degrees.
“These aren’t too common for us, given our high criteria locally,” said FOX 13’s meteorologist Tyler Eliasen. “I wouldn’t recommend spending long periods of time outside today if you can avoid it.”
