His father is Manfred Bockelmann, with whom his mother married in 1974 and divorced in 2011. Likewise, his grandfather, Hardy Kruger, passed away unexpectedly of unknown causes on 19 January 2022 at the age of 93.

Gained worldwide attention for The One That Got Away (1957), he had a defining role in the 1962 Oscar-winning French picture, Sundays and Cybèle. He also received the Lifetime Achievement prize at the 60th Bambi Awards in 2008.
