The Statler Brothers (sometimes known as simply The Statlers in country music circles) were an American country music, gospel, and backup vocal group for Johnny Cash that performed in the 1960s and 1970s. The quartet was established in the Virginia town of Staunton in 1955. Originally known as The Four Star Quartet, the group went on to play gospel music at various churches around the area under the name The Kingsmen. When the song “Louie, Louie” by the garage rock band The Kingsmen, also known as The Kingsmen, became popular in 1963, the band decided to rebrand themselves as The Statler Brothers to capitalise on their fame. The group’s name belies the fact that just two of its members (Don and Harold Reid) are biological brothers, and none of them have the surname Statler.
