Who Is Rodrigo Rosenberg? Guatemala Man Ordered His Own Hit

Rodrigo Rosenberg is a lawyer who claimed in a video aired after his own funeral that the Guatemalan president ordered his assassination. But, when the true tale was revealed, it was him ordering the assassination.

Moreover, he lived alone in a posh District 14 apartment in Guatemala City, a haven for diplomats and heirs to 19th-century wealth. The balding 47-year-old lawyer was despondent and divorced, and he was estranged from his children, who lived in Mexico with his ex-wife.

The closest thing to a roommate was Rosenberg’s bodyguard, and the closest thing to exercise was his abandoned bicycle on the terrace.

Who Is Rodrigo Rosenberg? Wikipedia

Rodrigo Rosenberg Marzano was a Guatemalan lawyer who died on May 10, 2009. Rosenberg produced a video message before his death, indicating that if he had been murdered, President of Guatemala Lvaro Colom Caballeros, Gustavo Alejos, Sandra Torres de Colom, and Gregorio Valdés would have been personally responsible.

His assassination sparked a national outcry. Officials determined that Rosenberg had planned his own death and contacted cousins of his former wife, Francisco José Ramón Valdés Paiz and José Estuardo Valdés Paiz, to hire a hitman after a UN commission probe.

The investigation was led at the time by Carlos Castresana, the head of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), who stressed that this was only a possibility. The cousins were sentenced to prison for involvement in a closed-door session, where they remained for more than two years without a trial.

The same commission’s investigation revealed ties between the guys who shot Rosenberg and those who killed Marjorie and Khalil Musa.

The video showing Rosenberg’s burial, which was then uploaded on YouTube and carried on national television, sparked a political crisis in Guatemala. Protesters gathered in Guatemala City’s Central Plaza, and opponents called for him to resign.

When Attorney-General and Chief of the Public Prosecutor’s Office Amilcar Velásquez was observed leaving Colom’s private property, the dispute erupted.

Following their encounter, the two dignitaries claimed contradictory justifications for their meeting, raising doubts about the investigation’s impartiality. President Colom went on national television to refute Rosenberg’s allegations and urge an investigation by both the UN and the FBI.

On May 13, 2009, Stephen G. McFarland, the United States Ambassador to Guatemala, reported that FBI employees had arrived in Guatemala to assist with the investigation.
