Australian politician Stewart John West died on March 29, 2023, at age 88.
From 1977 until 1993, while holding the Cunningham seat in New South Wales, he represented the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the House of Representatives.
On October 15, 1977, West was chosen to fill Rex Connor’s vacancy in the House of Representatives in the Cunningham by-election. In 1980, Bill Hayden elevated him to the shadow ministry.
In the Cabinet of Prime Minister Bob Hawke, West was named Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs after the Labor Party won the 1983 federal election.
West, the lone cabinet minister from Labor’s left-wing party, found himself at differences with the Labor Right-dominated Cabinet. Unable to accept a cabinet decision on uranium mining, he resigned on November 4, 1983.
