The problem with CNN
He earned his master’s degree in security studies from Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in 2013, but it was not without controversy. The Cable News Network (CNN) said he plagiarized 47 parts of his thesis without properly crediting his sources. According to the CNN report, his thesis on “The compatibility of American security and privacy rights” was taken up in full in The 9/11 Commission Report, George W. Bush’s memoir, Decision Points, and the reports of the American Civil Liberties Union without properly placing citations to their sources.
This report causes the Naval Postgraduate School to remove the thesis from their online archives and they write a letter to Clarke in July 2017 at the direction of Commander Paul Rasmussen, the Dean of Students, who states that his thesis was plagiarized and thus contravened in honor of the school. code, however; the “violation was not of any willful attempt at deception or misappropriation” and he would have to submit a revised thesis or a revocation of the degree would be initiated.
It is not yet known whether he complied with this directive and what became of his degree.
