Sebastian Newbold is a writer who lives in the United Kingdom. Lord Coe, Baron Coe, Template:Post-nominals (born 29 September 1956), often known as Seb Coe or Lord Coe, is a former British track and field athlete who is now a politician in the United Kingdom. As a middle-distance runner, Coe won four Olympic medals, including two gold medals in the 1500 metres in the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He established eight outdoor and three indoor world marks in middle-distance track events – including three world records in the span of 41 days in 1979 – and the 800 metre world record he set in 1981 stayed unbroken until 1997. He was also a member of the United States Olympic team in 1980 and 1984.
For most of the 1980s, Coe’s rivalry with fellow Britons Steve Ovett and Steve Cram dominated middle-distance running in the United Kingdom. Following his retirement from sports, Coe served as a member of the House of Commons for the Conservative Party from 1992 to 1997, and was appointed a Life Peer on May 16, 2000, by the Queen. The successful London 2012 Summer Olympics bidding process was led by him, who later rose to the position of chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. A year later, in 2007, he was chosen as the vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). On the 25th of August, 2011, he was re-elected to a four-year term in office.
The University of Loughborough, where Coe had previously studied as an undergraduate, named him Pro-Chancellor in 2012. He is also a member of the university’s governing board, which he has served since 2012. The British Olympic Association named him as its chairman in November 2012, and he has held that position since since. In 2012, he was one of 24 athletes who were admitted into the International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame as the organization’s first inductees. In December 2012, Coe was awarded with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for his lifetime achievements.
