Scott Donald Pruett (born March 24, 1960 in Roseville, California) is a former NASCAR, Champ Car, IMSA, Trans-Am, and Grand-Am racing car driver. He and his wife Judy are writers of children’s books and have three children. Pruett began racing go karts when he was eight years old and has since won 10 professional karting championships. He rose to prominence as a top American sports car racer in the 1980s, winning two IMSA GTO championships and three Trans-Am Series titles. Pruett was a regular on the CART series in the 1990s. He made 145 starts between 1988 and 1999, winning two races, claiming five poles, and finishing on the podium fifteen times (top three finishes). Pruett was severely wounded both legs in a major accident during pre-season testing in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1990.
Pruett spent the 1990 season recuperating and, on occasion, calling ESPN IndyCar telecasts as colour commentator, with Paul Page handling play-by-play duties. In 1994, he returned to the CART series to test Firestone tyres with the reconstituted Pat Patrick outfit. He went on to win the Trans-Am Series Championship later that year. In 1995, he raced full-time for Patrick Racing, utilising Firestone rubber in the CART series for the first time, and won his first race at the Michigan 500 in a dramatic last-lap battle with Al Unser, Jr. At 1997, he won his last CART series race in Australia’s Surfers Paradise (Nikon Indy 300). Following his Champ Car career, Pruett raced in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series with PPI Motorsports in 2000, but had limited success, placing 37th in the points standings with just one top-10 finish. He returned to sports car racing in 2003, winning his third Trans-Am Series championship. He has competed in the Grand Prix since 2004.
