Benedict Arnold was once a patriotic war hero respected by George Washington and admired by his men.
His name, however, has become synonymous with betrayal. Arnold was a Revolutionary War military officer from the United States.
He distinguished himself as a member of the American Continental Army, rising to the rank of major general before defecting to the British side of the conflict in 1780.
General George Washington had placed him in command of West Point in New York and had given him his full faith.
Arnold planned to surrender the fort to British forces there, but the ruse was uncovered in September 1780, and he withdrew to British lines.
Later in the war, Arnold was promoted to brigadier general in the British Army and given command of the American Legion.

When the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775 between Great Britain and its 13 American colonies, the general became a successful trader and joined the Continental Army.
Arnold was formerly regarded as a patriotic war hero by George Washington and admired by his men. However, his name has become associated with a traitor.
Arnold’s actions have been condensed over time to fit a narrative of right and wrong. While Arnold’s treachery was obvious, he offered the British control of the military bastion at New York, in exchange for 10,000 pounds.
And, according to a British military commission, the events leading up to that moment of treachery were more complicated and less political than is commonly taught.
