Samantha McCollum WACH FOX News
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) — A curfew will go in effect in the city of Columbia starting Wednesday. During a virtual meeting Tuesday, Columbia City Council voted unanimously to impose curfew in the city of Columbia.
“I thought that was smart. We want to do everything that we can to make everyone realize how serious this is,” said Columbia resident Gretchen Lambert.
“I wasn’t too surprised. It’ll kind of prevent people from staying out late trying to do things, large gatherings,” said Will Lominack, who also lives in Columbia.
The curfew will run from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. and starts Wednesday, but not everyone is on board. “But I don’t know if it’ll be that effective. Since it is 11 p.m. people will already be out before then in large gatherings,” said Lominack.
The curfew does have an exception for people going to or from work and those dealing with a medical emergency.
“At this time everyone who can work and is able to work needs to be out there making money because we’re all going to be in dire straits here in a couple of days or couple weeks,” said Lambert.
The curfew will automatically expire after 61 days, but council members have the option to vote to end it sooner than that.
