What Colleges Have Never Won A National Championship?

The colleges that have never won a national championship are Boston Eagles, Washington Cougars, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Arizona Wildcats, and Utah Utes.

Though having gone undefeated in 1940, the Eagles have not had so much luck regarding the national titles. The team had a 10-0 record that season but finished fifth in the AP poll when Minnesota was awarded the title for the year.

After that, their best score came in 1984 and ended at 10-2. The team is still waiting for their first national title so far.

Fate has not favored the Cougars of Washington as well. 1917 was their first undefeated year but Georgia Tech was voted in for the title. They had the Pacific Coast Conference Title that season and three more in 1930, 1997, and 2002.

1930 was their other undefeated regular season but Alabama outstood them in the Rose Bowl by 24-0. In 1997, they lost to Michigan by 5 points.

Arizona Wildcats are trying to contend in their own conference, but the national title is still a long journey for them. They appeared in the Fiesta Bowls in 1994 and 1979.

The team finished the 1993-1994 season being on the top 10 of both polls but has never run the table. Some also claim that the Wildcats have never been to the BCS Bowl.

For Utah Utes, the 2004-05 season was the shining moment when they won the Fiesta Bowl. Their final game score against Pittsburgh was 35-7. The team has seen several downs in history and still waiving at national titles.

Some other teams which have never won any national titles to date are:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs
  • North Carolina State Wolfpack
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • Missouri Tigers
  • Oregon Ducks

How Many National Championships Does Michigan Have?

NCAA has recognized 9 national championship titles for Michigan. The team has claimed 11 national titles and has 7 unclaimed ones.

The Wolverines football national title journey began in 1901. Fielding Yost was the team coach during that time under whom the team went victorious for four straight seasons including 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1904.

The undefeated four consecutive years gave them a combined performance win-loss record of 43-0. That was considered an incredible dominant run that established the team as one of the most powerful forces in the world of CFB.

But such forces didn’t seem to work in 1905. The Wolverines experienced a 14-year-long drought in the national trophy after the last season and sought vengeance in 1918.

They finally achieved the 1918 national title with Ken Knode as the leading quarterback and Yost was still coaching the team.

It took the team another seven years to return back to what they had recorded in the ’18 season. Yost brought the team with new lineups in 1923 and claimed another trophy with an undefeated season. That was his last title as the college football head coach and also his sixth undefeated season.

The year 1933 saw the team rising as the power force of CFB as they took home their 7th title with a W-L-T record of 7-0-1. It was 10 years after their last title.

They had their hands on the remaining two in 1948; after 15 years and in 1997; which was Michigan’s ninth and most recent national trophy win.
