Richardson stated on television programme This Morning that he is gay on 15 September 2010. That was what he had accepted at the age of 20. He was inspired to come out by Joe McElderry. Richardson received homophobic abuse via social networking site Twitter in July 2014. Richardson married long-term partner Carl Hyland in a ceremony in the Peak District in April 2015.
Richardson announced they were expecting twins via surrogacy in December 2016. They have son and daughter twins born in 2017.

From 10 January to 28 March 2010, the fifth series of Dancing on Ice aired on ITV. It had a preview show on 8 January 2010. This was the last series to feature Slater as a full-time judge, though he returned as a guest judge for two weeks in the ninth series in 2014. For this series only, a spin-off show aired on Friday evenings on ITV, called Dancing on Ice: Friday.
It was presented by Ben Shephard and Coleen Nolan. However it was won by former Emmerdale actress Hayley Tamaddon, with Daniel Whiston as the professional winner. The Bill actor Gary Lucy finished second, with Hollyoaks actor Kieron Richardson third.

Later upon appearing briefly in the late night Hollyoaks: In the City, Richardson was offered the role of Ste Hay in the early evening Hollyoaks where he appeared for 19 episodes. His character was written out of the show after stealing a car, which resulted in a spectacular crash and his character getting sent to prison. He returned to Hollyoaks on 25 September 2007 and has been a regular cast member since.
He has also made appearances in Holby City, Heartbeat and the feature film Fragments, as well as the pantomime Cinderella as Prince Charming at The Embassy Theatre, Skegness, in 2006. He also took part in 2010 series of ITV’s Dancing on Ice and was paired with series newcomer Brianne Delcourt. He reached the final, finishing in third place.
