Kevin Peek (December 21, 1946 – February 11, 2013) was an Australian guitarist who performed rock and classical music. He is best known for his work with the progressive rock band Sky. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and began his musical career as a classical percussionist at the Adelaide Conservatorium of Music before learning to play the guitar on his own. Peek established the James Taylor Move, a psychedelic pop, progressive rock band, in 1967, but left in May 1968 to relocate to London. He returned to Adelaide, Australia, to join Quatro, a freshly formed rock band that, despite a Decca Records contract, was artistically unsuccessful. Following their move to London, he and his fellow Adelaide-born bandmates—guitarist Terry Britten, bassist Alan Tarney, and drummer Trevor Spencer—made a living as session musicians, performing with everyone from the New Seekers and Mary Hopkin (Earth Song, Ocean Song) to Cliff Richard, with whom they became Cliff Richard’s regular backing band on stage and on record during the 1970s. Manfred Mann, Lulu, Tom Jones, Jeff Wayne (War of the Worlds), Shirley Bassey, and others were among Peek’s collaborators. He composed the music for Singapore Airlines’ internationally broadcast “Singapore Girl” television commercials. He became a member of the jazz/progressive rock band Sky in 1979. Before leaving the band in 1985, Peek worked with classical guitarist John Williams, keyboardist Francis Monkman, bassist Herbie Flowers, and drummer Tristan Fry on seven studio recordings. Peek released three albums, Guitar Junction, Awakening, and Life & Other Games, but his work with Sky and session work with Olivia Newton-John, Kiki Dee, Sally Oldfield, the Alan Parsons Project, and the London Symphony Orchestra helped him gain recognition (in association with Francis Monkman on their Symphonic Rock: British Invasion releases). He also contributed to a number of soundtracks, notably the music for The Long Good Friday by Monkman. Following a failed business venture and bankruptcy, he was charged with two charges of making a false statement with the intent to deceive or defraud in Perth, Western Australia in 2010. A complete trial was originally set for 2011, but it was postponed until 2012 and never held. Peek, who was 66 years old at the time, died of melanoma at a Perth hospice on February 11, 2013.
