Journalist Stephanie Gosk of NBC News was injured in a “gruesome” bike incident and required surgery and stitches on her hand, but her head was saved due to her helmet.
After colliding with the ground on a group bike ride last month, the reporter is encouraging people to take bike safety seriously.
Gosk, 50, revealed in a piece for Today.com that road riding had become her main interest, and she promptly signed up for a 65-mile trip once the weather warmed up this spring.

When Journalist Stephanie Gosk collapsed while riding her bike through suburban New Jersey, neighbors promptly dialed 911. “It was a bleak scene. My face, like my hands, was a shambles. In two spots, my helmet was completely shattered through, “she stated
Gosk had stitches over her eye and surgery on her right thumb while in the hospital. “However, owing to my helmet, I didn’t lose consciousness or suffer a concussion,” she explained.
Gosk now wants people to realize how critical wearing a helmet is to remain safe when bicycling.
She urged that people look at the Virginia Tech helmet ratings – researchers at the school crash-test helmets to ensure their safety — before they buy and that they obtain a new helmet every five years, even if they haven’t been in an accident.
Gosk claimed she was “extraordinarily fortunate” that she wasn’t harmed any worse — and that she hopes to return to riding as soon as her thumb recovers.
Last month, she claimed, she was riding with a group when her bike fell to the ground. She added that she began riding during the epidemic, and it later became a pastime for her. She, too, had signed up for a 65-mile bike.
