Marie Ollie Imogene Shepard (née Shepard) (born November 21, 1933), best known by her stage name Jean Shepard, is an American honky tonk singer-songwriter who was a trailblazer for female artists in country music. There were a total of 73 songs recorded by Shepard that appeared on the Hot Country Songs list, with one of them reaching No. 1. Between 1956 and 1981, she released a total of 24 studio albums, and she has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since its inception in 1955. After Kitty Wells’ breakthrough in 1952, Shepard soon followed, and a national television appearance and a stint on the Grand Ole Opry helped establish her as a celebrity at a time when few female country singers had long-term success. ‘A Dear John Letter,’ a duet with Ferlin Husky that became a success in 1953, was the first post-World War II country single by a female performer to sell more than a million copies.
