Janet Anderson was a Labour Party politician in England. Anderson served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Rossendale and Darwen from 1992 until 2010 when she was defeated in the election. Her time as an MP is remembered for her role as Tourism Minister during the foot and mouth crisis, as well as her involvement in the 2009 expenses scandal.
Anderson successfully fought Rossendale and Darwen in the 1992 General Election, winning by only 120 votes. Anderson was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Margaret Beckett, for a year before resigning due to Beckett’s opposition to John Smith’s ‘One Member, One Vote’ campaign.
From 1994 to 1996, Anderson served as an opposition whip before being appointed Shadow Minister for Women. While in this position in October 1996, she famously joked in an interview that women would become “more promiscuous” under a Labour government.
