Oleksiak is of Scottish and Ukrainian ancestry. Before relocating to the US to pursue his hockey career, he went to school at Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario, alongside Dougie and Freddie Hamilton.
Oleksiak’s performance in the AHL decreased in the last year of his entry-level contract, but he still managed to score eight points in 36 games with the Dallas Stars in the NHL.
Oleksiak was chosen to play for the Dallas Stars on opening night in 2014–15 for the first time.
He was one of the six defensemen on whom the Stars intended to rely all season.
However, during the course of the season, the Stars called up a lot of defensemen from their AHL club as injuries struck the squad.
