XFL is not profitable now after facing a loss of approximately $60 million in 2023 and laying off some jobs, per Forbes. It is expected to raise $100 million in profit after coming in strong in 2024.
The spring league football is wide open for anyone to claim. The United States Football League came back to life in 2021 and is the strongest competitor for the XFL.
There has not been a single entity that lasted longer to make the springtime a football period. XFL, USFL, World League of American Football (1991), and Arena Football League all canceled and couldn’t leave a lasting impression.
This time, one thing different for the XFL is the optimistic outlook for long-term planning backed by influential owners.
Gerry Cardinale, the league’s co-owner, believes they can be more significant than Major League Soccer and have positive cash flow within five years.
How Much Money Did The XFL Lose?
XFL lost 60 million dollars in 2023. The inaugural 2001 season operated by Vince McMahon saw a loss of $50 million in TV network.
XFL profits are expected to reach $100 million in 2024. Dany Garcia, the Rock’s former wife, and the current XFl chair, claims they are “extremely well-capitalized for the long-term,” reports Bleacher Report.

XFL loss in the financial department has not lowered the morale of the owners and people affiliated with the project. The revamped version of the league in its inaugural season only looks at the positives.
XFL losing money in its first campaign with new proprietors does not mean they are opting out and calling it quits. XFL President, Russ Brandon, mentioned on the XFL site that the new season “was a success,” and the attendance, viewership, and digital engagement all show an upward spiral.
Brandon clarified, “We have built this League on a very strong foundation and we will continue to build and grow as we plan for 2024 and beyond.” It captures the essence of what Garcia meant by her words when she emphasized ‘long-term.’
How Much Is The XFL Worth?
XFL owner net worth for co-owner Gerry Cardinale is around $200 million. Likewise, Danny Garcia has amassed a wealth of $40 million.
XFL net worth is yet to be revealed. The league’s intellectual and other rights were brought by Alpha Acquico in August 2020.
XFL franchise cost can reach a maximum capacity of $100 million. Meanwhile, the rate for a franchise in the USFL can cost at least $6 million.
Dwayne Johnson XFL
Dwayne Johnson net worth is estimated to be over $800 million in 2023. His yearly income is estimated to be around $270 million.
The 52-year-old professional wrestler turned actor was in the 4th position for the Forbes Highest-Paid Entertainers of 2022.
Most of his income comes from acting. He is a big-budget superstar who has been part of big productions like Black Adam, Jumangi, Red Notice, Jungle Cruise, and many more.
He sponsors and endorses products like Under Armour, Zoa Energy, Seven Bucks Production, Teremana Tquilla, and Salt & Straw. He is also part of charity works with Dwaynw Johnson Rock Foundation, Make-A-Wish, and GoFundMe.
How Much Did The Rock Buy The XFL For?
The Rock bought the XFL for $23.5 million and paid an additional $8.5 million for a previous debt settlement.
Johnson partnered with RedBird Capital Partners and Disney investors Gerry Cardinale and Danny Garcia to launch Alpha Acquico, a joint venture holding company.
The company attained XFL in August 2020 after McMahon declared bankruptcy. The New York Times reported that the executive chairman of WWE filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in its revamped 2020 season, cut short by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
It is reported that owner of the Alpha Entertainment invested over $200 million in the revival of the league in 2020. Another $500 million was brought in through funding.
It was associated with ESPN and FOX as the networking partners and was optimistic about conquering the spring league and giving the NFL a go for their money. But it didn’t go as planned, and everyone knows the result.
The 2020 campaign saw an excellent first response: the average viewership reached 3.1 million in the opening week. By the fifth and sixth weeks, it was still kicking at over 1.5 million, which was a good sign.
Who knows where the league would have found itself if the global pandemic had not occurred that year?
XFL Revenue And Financials
XFL revenue 2023 was $20.6 million in ad spending by brands and $18.6 million in ticket sales, reports The Athletic.
Before the mid-season stoppage in 2020, the league, under the ownership of McMahon, was able to bag around $20 million. At that time, the investment was too high, and the return couldn’t match it and was doomed for failure.
Comparing the XFL revenue to the $2.7 billion earnings of the NFL, we can see how colossal the gap between the two leagues is.
It has everything to do with television rights, ad revenue, enormous investments, and a larger audience.
Likewise, the XFL and USFL players earn in a similar range. The highest-paid athlete in XFL makes $72K, while the USFL player makes the maximum of $74K in salary and bonuses.
The viewership for regular games of the XFL season was 622K per game. The championship game saw 1.43 million people tune in to watch Arlington Renegades play against D.C. Defenders.
Meanwhile, the Super Bowl LVII reached 113.06 million average TV viewers.
What Is The XFL League?
The XFL league is a professional football league played between eight teams for ten regular season weeks and two postseason weeks.
It was first launched in 2001 by Vincent Kennedy McMahon in association with NBC. After its failure, it was again brought back in 2020, but the global pandemic hindered its rise, and it was shut down mid-season.
In 2020, Alpha Acquico, backed by Dwayne Johnson, Danny Garcia, and Gerry Cardinale, acquired the league and played its first season from 18th February to 13th May.
The eight teams are divided into South and North Divison, where each franchise organizes five home games for the regular season. Several rules are different from what we see at the NFL games, such as:
- Point conversion after a touchdown does not include kicking. Each team can try for one point from the 2-yard line, two points from the 5-yard line, and three points from the 10-yard line.
- Overtime provides each team with three opportunities for a two-point conversion. The team with the most conversion wins.
- Two forward passes are allowed, but one must be from behind the scrimmage line.
- It operates on a 35-second play clock.

- Arlington Renegades – 4-6
- St.Louis Battlehawks – 7-3
- San Antonio Brahmas – 3-7
- Vegas Vipers – 2-8
- Orlando Guardians – 1-9
The two teams from each division booked their place for the postseason. Defenders and Dragons qualified from the North, while Roughnecks and Renegades followed them from the South.
In the championship match helped on 13th May 2023, Arlington Renegades were victorious over D.C. Defenders with a score of 35-26.
When Did The XFL Shut Down?
The XFL shut down for the first time after 2001’s inaugural season. Following the global pandemic, it was canceled for the second time on 12th March 2020.
The joint venture of WWF and NBC saw eight teams divided into the Eastern and Western divisions. The aggressive approach with fewer rules and some never-seen ones made it a standout for a few weeks.

But, as the weeks progressed, the ratings and viewership plummeted. Both the parent companies lost $35 million by the end of the campaign.
Similarly, the resurgence of 2020 was halted by COVID-19, and McMahon declared bankruptcy.
The fans have felt A new dawn since the Rock and his partners took over the helms. They have a long-term vision in sight and are readily moving forward to make it last longer than the league’s predecessors.
XFL Cuts
XFL layoffs include the dismissal of Vice President of Marketing and Brand Anthony Zucconi and Chief Marketing Officer Janet Duch.
Several marketing employees were let go by the organization. Numerous people were shifted to seasonal status. They are temporarily laid off by their employer and are expected to come back during the start of the preseason.
Dan Gagnier speaking for XFL told Pro Football Talk that they have adapted “a dual full-time and seasonal-based employment model to improve efficiency and drive sustainable business performance across all markets.” He added that hiring will be done for the pre-season and in-season roles.
