Pamela Rosalie Kearns Combs (born September 11, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an aerobatic pilot from the United States who flies in the International Aerobatic Competition (IAC). Growing up, Wagstaff went all over the globe with her father, who worked as a pilot for Japan Airlines. Wagstaff visited places like Southeast Asia, Australia, and Alaska in order to prepare for her future job as an airline pilot. It was aboard a Cessna 185 that she had her first flight lesson, and she has subsequently acquired permits to fly a variety of aircraft types, including helicopters. Toni is Toni’s sister, and she works as a pilot for Continental Airlines. Wagstaff qualified for the United States Aerobatic Team in 1985 and competed with them until 1996. For many years, she was the most successful medalist from the United States, earning gold, silver, and bronze medals in international competition. In 1987, she was awarded the Rolly Cole Memorial Award for her achievements to the aerobatic sports, and in 1991, she became the first woman to win the United States National Aerobatic Championships, which she would go on to win three more times. Western Flyer’s Magazine readers selected her as their favourite pilot in 1991, and she has held that position ever since. In 1993, she was crowned champion of the International Aerobatic Club. Her Extra 260 aircraft, which was sponsored by Goodrich and displayed beside Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Vega at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum, was dedicated in 1994 to her memory. She received the Betty Skelton First Lady of Aerobatics award six years in a row from 1988 to 1994, a record for a female acrobat. During the World Aerobatics Championships in 1996, Wagstaff was the highest-scoring American pilot. In 1996, she was also awarded the GAN & Flyer Magazine Readers’ Choice Award for best female pilot, as well as the Charlie Hillard Trophy for outstanding achievement in aviation. It was not just accolades and victories that distinguished Wagstaff; in 1997, she became the first woman to be admitted into a Hall of Fame, joining the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame as well as the International Women’s Aviation Hall of Fame. In 1997, she received the NAA Paul Tissandier certificate, and in 1998, she was given the Bill Barber award for sportsmanship for her efforts. In 2002, she was awarded the Katherine and Marjorie Stinson Award, and in 2004, she was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, which is probably the most prestigious Hall of Fame in aviation, if not the world. In December 2006, Wagstaff was honoured into the International Council of Air Shows Foundation Hall of Fame for his contributions to the aviation industry. The Wings Club of New York honoured her with the Outstanding Aviator Award in March 2013, which she received in recognition of her achievements. Wagstaff, who now resides in St. Augustine, Florida, continues to work in the aviation industry as an airshow pilot, stunt pilot for films, consultant, flying teacher, and author, among other things. She serves on the National Air and Space Museum’s Emeritus Board of Directors, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution. As a member of the Centennial of Flight Commission, she served on the Presidential Advisory Committee. In addition to the Extra, T-6, and P-51 Mustang, she performs airshows throughout North America in a number of other aircraft as well. Wagstaff has also flown OV-10 Broncos as a seasonal fireman in California, in addition to participating in airshows.
