How to make a ballet barre

Instead of using a ballet barre, a dancer can use a chair or stool, a table, a desk, or even a kitchen bench. A broomstick attached securely between two chairs can create a makeshift barre. A balcony, porch, or pergola railing are also good options.

Depending on where you buy your materials from, what thickness of pipe you choose and if you choose to make a double or single barre you are looking at a cost between $20 to $40 for your materials. This includes the fixings such as the PVC elbows and tees you will need to assemble the pipe together.

The barre should come to the waist level for the average height of an adult. If you’re installing one barre and not a double barre, it should be approximately 42-44 inches from the floor for an adult. And 32-34 inches from the floor for children.

You don’t need a lot of equipment.

Your “barre” can be everything from a highchair to the edge of your couch. The main thing you need? A yoga mat to support your core, back, and booty. Some virtual classes might also use light hand weights.

“Most barre studios have carpeting and they’ll say you need to wear socks for sanitary reasons. For your first time, it’s okay to wear ankle socks that you‘d wear with running shoes. If you like the class, invest in a pair of socks with grips on the bottoms.

Yes, men are absolutely welcome at Pure Barre. We have quite a few male clients who attend regular classes and see great results. It can be done in small spaces, and it is a style of exercise that is suitable for beginners — if you continue to practise barre, over time your strength, technique and confidence will increase. You don’t need to be a dancer to get started — if you’re new to barre, here’s what you need to know to work out at home.

The truth is, barre workouts are hard. The challenge is largely due to the fact that they target muscles in specific ways that aren’t necessarily used in everyday movement.

Barre will help you build and strengthen your muscles, improve your core strength and posture and give your body a lean and toned look. Unlike yoga and Pilates, which can sometimes take weeks and even months to see visible results, barre participants start seeing results in as little as eight workouts.

What Barre Does To Your Thighs. Although barre may end up giving you leaner legs, you might notice them going in the opposite direction slightly at first, says Rogers. And once your muscles get used to this type exercise, they’ll stop holding the water and you’ll end up with stronger, slimmer thighs as a result.

The barre moves are too slow to give you an aerobic workout. So unless you’re in a class that includes exercises off the barre that gets your heart rate going, don’t count this as cardio. Strength: Yes.

And while weight loss isn’t the main focus of a barre class (you‘re unlikely to shed the pounds as quickly as you might from spin or HIIT), you‘ll feel slimmer thanks to your improved posture and alignment. Your muscles will feel toned, your limbs will look longer, and you‘ll be standing taller.

Yes! Most Bar Method students burn 250–500 calories in a class — and they continue to burn additional calories for several hours after the workout due to the intense muscle work.

Barre exercises focus on the lower body and are designed to help you lose the pounds, as well as reducing cellulite.

So there you have it: toned thighs are made in the kitchen, not at the bar. Can Barre Create “Longer” Muscles? Actually, No. A repeated phrase in all barre class advertisements are that muscles will become longer through stretching.

Increase in Strength

Most barre classes focus on arms, core, legs, and glutes so you can expect a fairly well-rounded toning workout.

Barre takes several classes to get the hang of, so be patient and give yourself time to learn the exercises and technique. We recommend taking class 3-5 times per week to get the best results.

A focused strength training routine is typically the better chance for fat loss and weight maintenance, because it creates a more sustained increase in metabolism. But a cardio-focused barre workout can help you build muscle and burn calories — and if you enjoy it, you’re more likely to stick it out for the long haul.

Barre Keeps Your Core Engaged

Even when you are working out your arms, legs, and booty, you will be giving your abs a healthy burn. If you were in a barre class, you might hear your instructors tell you to “draw in” your abs.

POPSUGAR spoke to Adrienne Richmond, Pure Barre owner in San Francisco, CA, who said, “Barre workouts do contribute to weight loss because you are breaking down muscle and building strength within every section of class.”

Your Muscles Strengthen Faster than You Burn Fat:

If you’ve been a self-proclaimed “cardio queen” prior to joining The Bar Method, your body likely has a higher percentage of fat than someone who has been strength training for longer. Burning fat takes longer than growing muscle.
