How to grow spinach in pots

Container grown spinach is easily accessible too. It can be grown on the window sill, right outside the kitchen door or on a balcony. It’s easier to harvest and eat fresh greens when they are practically right in front of you. Spinach only takes between 40-45 days to reach harvesting potential.

Spinach is a cool-weather vegetable related to beets and Swiss chard. A fast-growing plant, it yields many leaves in a short time in the mild weather of spring and fall. Although it prefers full sun, spinach will still produce a respectable harvest in partial shade.

Planting Spinach

Refrigerate seeds 1 week before sowing to help germination. Sow seed 2 to 4 inches (5-10cm) apart. Space rows 12 to 14 inches (30-35cm) apart. Spinach seed will germinate in 5 to 9 days at 70°F (21°C) Germination will take longer if the soil is cooler, about 21 days at 50°F (10°C).

Growing Spinach from Seeds

Choose a wide-mouthed pot that is about 6 to 8 inches deep. You can also use a garden box, wooden box, even a crate as a planter for the spinach.

The whole plant can be harvested at once, and cut at the base, or leaves may be picked off plants one layer at a time, giving inner layers more time to develop.

How to Grow Spinach in Pots Easily. Pick a pot that is about 20 centimetres deep, you will usually want to give each plant about 8 centimetres distance between spinach plants, but you can reduce this to 5 centimetres if you‘re going to harvest early and keep them small.

Spinach is an annual crop. As an annual, each plant grows for a single season. New plants are grown from seed at the beginning of the growing season. Perennials, in contrast, die down to the soil line in fall and regrow from perennial roots each spring.

Spinach – A good companion for Brassicas, eggplants, leeks, lettuce, peas, radish, and strawberries, particularly. Don’t plant spinach near potatoes. Squash – Companions: corn, lettuce, melons, peas, and radish. Avoid planting near Brassicas or potatoes.

They also do well among carrots because they are harvested before the carrots and they loosen the soil as the carrots start to take off. Onions, beets, cabbage, kale, lettuce, spinach, and squash are also good friends for radishes.

To get the best out of your carrot plantation, you can grow them together with other vegetables such as leeks, onions, tomatoes, and alliums. Grow your cauliflower together with plants such as celery, spinach, peas, and beans. Celeriac, unlike other vegetables, is not an easy plant to grow.

Carrots need a location that receives full sunlight, though they can tolerate partial shade, too. As discussed above, soil must be loose, sandy or loamy, and airy so that carrot roots can easily push down through the soil.

Plants that should not share space with tomatoes include the Brassicas, such as broccoli and cabbage. Corn is another no-no, and tends to attract tomato fruit worm and/or corn ear worm. Kohlrabi thwarts the growth of tomatoes and planting tomatoes and potatoes increases the chance of potato blight disease.

Banana peels are good fertilizer because of what they do not contain. This means potassium-rich banana peels are excellent for plants like tomatoes, peppers or flowers. Banana peels also contain calcium, which prevents blossom end rot in tomatoes.

Tomatoes

Although it’s usually recommended to not plant tomatoes and peppers right after each other in the same bed every year, they can be grown together in the same garden bed (and then rotated to another bed next season).

Coffee grounds added to compost and used in the garden as organic fertilizer give your tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants a boost, attract earthworms and may deter both slugs and insect pests in the garden.

Peppers grow best in warm weather. Plant them only when all danger of cold weather has passed. Plant fall peppers 12 to 16 weeks before the first expected frost. Make the transplant holes 3 to 4 inches deep and about 1½ feet apart in the row.
