In 1946, Bertha Louise Hable was born in Dallas, Texas, and became known as Lulu Roman, a stand-up comedian and vocalist. Probably her most well-known television role is as a regular on the comedy-music television series Hee Haw. Roman was born with thyroid malfunction at a facility for unwed mothers and was raised in an orphanage until he was able to support himself. She went to W.W. Samuell High School in Dallas, where she graduated in 1964 with honours. During her time on Hee Haw, she battled a heroin addiction that lasted for many months. She cleaned up her act and turned to Christianity, after which she started to sing for the first time.
This led to a career as a singer of Southern Gospel music, for which Roman has recorded many CDs despite the fact that she never had formal vocal training. When Lulu Roman was inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame alongside other singers Andy Griffith, Barbara Mandrell, David L. Cook, Gary S. Paxton, Loretta Lynn, and others in 1999, she was known as “The Queen of Country Gospel Music.”
