Gregory Arthur “Greg” Phillinganes (born May 12, 1956, Detroit, Michigan, United States) is an American session keyboardist located in Los Angeles, California. He has worked on a variety of projects for various artists. He received his high school diploma from Cass Technical High School in Detroit. Philip Phillinganes was found by Stevie Wonder, who was listening to an instrumental version of one his own songs performed by Phillinganes on a cassette tape. The Wonderlove band, which Phillinganes was a member of from 1976 to 1981, was hired by Wonder and became Phillinganes’ employer. Significant Gains was his debut solo album, which was published in 1981. However, despite the fact that the album as a whole was not a commercial success, “Baby, I Do Love You” became a modest R&B hit for him. 

His follow-up album, Pulse, was released three years later and included another modest success (and arguably his best-known solo hit), a version of Yellow Magic Orchestra’s song “Behind the Mask” (with additional lyrics written by Michael Jackson). The popularity of this song on the dance music charts was much greater than that of the previous one. When Phillinganes subsequently became a member of Eric Clapton’s backing band, he brought the song to Clapton, who recorded a cover version of it on his 1986 August album. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, in addition to his solo records and touring with Clapton, he established himself as a renowned session musician for a diverse range of musicians, appearing on several of the era’s biggest successful albums. Despite the passage of time, his session work continues. Among other artists, Greg Phillinganes has collaborated and toured with the Bee Gees, Donna Summer (with George Benson), Eric Clapton, Donald Fagen, Aretha Franklin (with Patti LaBelle), Michael Jackson (with Richard Marx), Paul McCartney (with Quincy Jones), Stevie Nicks (with Quincy Jones), and the Bee Gees (with George Benson).
