Francine Niyonsaba was banned from the 800m event in Tokyo Olympics. Is she transgender? To unveil the mystery surrounding her, keep following the article.
Francine Niyonsaba is a Burundian runner specializing in 800m track running events.
She boasts a great performance track record, Silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2017 World Championships, gold in the 2016 and 2018 World Indoor Championships, and gold and silver in the 2012 and 2018 African championships.
Furthermore, Francine is also the national record holder in the events, 800m, 400m, 2 miles, 5000m, and 10000m.
Recently, the athlete has been in the spotlight. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she was forced to change the 800m event due to Testosterone rules and disqualified from the 5000m event. But on 28 August 2021, she surprised the world with a great win at 3000m at the Diamond League in Paris.
Francine Niyonsaba Gender: Is She Transgender?
Francine Niyonsaba is not a trangender.
Although the transgender rumors are present, there isn’t proper evidence to support the rumors.
Furthermore, while many sources identify Niyonsaba as female, some have categorized her as an intersex athlete.
Apparently, the so-called intersex athletes are born with sex characters that don’t fit the typical definition of male or female involving testosterone levels. A standard understanding of the condition is that it provides relevant advantages to the athletes.
And, with that natural condition, Francine was banned in the 800m event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The banning procedure considers the new 2019 testosterone rules.
The dictionary definition of transgender is someone whose sex differs from the one that was assigned at birth. So, whether Niyonsaba is transgender or not is evident and shouldn’t require further explanation.
But, there might be a small possibility of the athlete being transgender as nothing is certain in this world.
Francine Niyonsaba Testosterone Level
Francine Niyonsaba has been directly impacted due to her naturally high testosterone level.
The 2019 World Athletics rules on testosterone levels require the athletes’ testosterone levels to be 5nmol/L or lower. And since she didn’t meet the conditions, her testosterone levels must be higher than 5nmol/L.
The normal testosterone level in females is between 0.3 and 2.4 nmol/L. So for Francine to compete in the 800m event, she was advised to lower her testosterone level to normal.
