Joseph Quinn, known for his compelling portrayal of Eddie Munson in the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” recently opened up about the unique challenges he faced while playing the character, including wearing a wig and adopting an American accent.
In a conversation with Esquire Singapore, Quinn revealed that watching himself as Eddie Munson was a somewhat surreal experience. He acknowledged the stark contrast between his real-life appearance and that of his character, particularly the distinctive long, wavy hair that Eddie sports. Quinn’s natural hair is more closely cropped, making the transformation even more striking.
“With Eddie, it was a very weird experience because obviously, I had this big wig on and I was trying to do my best American accent,” Quinn explained. “So there was this kind of physical and role difference at the same time.”
Eddie Munson, a metalhead and the leader of Hawkins High School’s “Dungeons & Dragons” club, quickly became a fan favorite since his debut in “Stranger Things” season four. His character’s unique appearance, complete with long hair, puppet-master, and bat tattoos, added depth to the show’s diverse cast of characters.
In addition to donning the wig, Quinn had the added challenge of adopting an American accent for the role. He confessed on the “Off Menu” podcast that the process was initially stressful, and he sometimes questioned how he sounded to others. “You feel like a sociopath,” Quinn humorously remarked during the podcast episode. “After a while, I was so far down the rabbit hole, at points I’d be like ‘Do I sound good? Do you like this? Do you like what I’m doing?’”
Despite the unique challenges, Quinn’s dedication to his craft shines through in his performance as Eddie Munson. His ability to immerse himself in the character, both physically and vocally, is a testament to his talent as an actor.
Reflecting on his experience watching “Stranger Things,” Quinn shared that the most rewarding aspect was witnessing the performances of his fellow cast members, including David Harbour, Winona Ryder, and Brett Gelman.
