Bethany Hamilton, an American competitive surfer and writer, was born on February 8, 1990. In 2003, she was attacked by a shark, and as a result, she lost her left arm. She eventually made a comeback to the sport.
She detailed her experience in the 2004 autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board, which was made into the 2011 motion picture Soul Surfer. She attributed her resilience to her Christian faith in this book. In 2018, a documentary titled Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, which focused on her, was released. It discussed her marriage to Adam Dirks and how becoming a mother and a professional surfer have impacted one another.

Through shared friends, Hamilton and youth minister Adam Dirks first spoke in early 2012. 2013 saw their engagement. On August 18, 2013, the pair exchanged vows at a residence on Kauai’s north shore, close to where she was raised. June 1, 2015, March 27, 2018, and February 14, 2021, respectively, marked the birth of their three sons. Throughout her documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, their marriage is highlighted. In addition to being a competitive surfer, she is currently teaching mentorship workshops on relationships, faith, and health.
