Golota is a Polish former professional boxer who contested from 1992 to 2013. He contested four times for a heavyweight world title, and as an amateur won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1988 Olympics. He was disqualified twice against Riddick Bowe for repeated low blows in fights that he was winning.

Golota won his first 27 fights, and 24 knockouts, and made his professional debut in February 1992. He quickly built his reputation and established himself as one of the most promising young heavyweights in the world. In 1996, he contested against Lennox Lewis for the WBC heavyweight title but was knocked out in the first round.

One year later, he contested against Riddick Bowe in a highly predicted fight. He was winning the fight effortlessly but was disqualified in the ninth round for repeated low blows. The fight was marred by disagreement, as many felt that Golota should not have been disqualified.

Golota and Riddick Bowe had a rematch in 1999, and again Golota was disqualified for low blows. This time, he was clearly losing the fight and was disqualified in the seventh round. He continued to fight for world titles despite beg disqualifications twice against Bowe. In 2000, he faced Mike Tyson for the WBA heavyweight title but quit in the third round due to a shoulder injury.

Golota continued to fight until 2013 but he never recovered his former prominence. He later retired with a record of 41-9-1, with 33 knockouts.
