Afro-Trinidadian parents brought Ribeiro into the world in the Riverdale section of The Bronx in New York City.
Albert Ribeiro, a Trinidadian calypsonian of African and Portuguese ancestry who sang under the stage name Lord Hummingbird, was his paternal grandfather.
In 1984, Ribeiro performed in a Michael Jackson-starring Pepsi commercial as a dancer, and a story quickly arose that Ribeiro had died after snapping his neck while performing.
On the television series Silver Spoons, Ribeiro was chosen to play Rick Schroder’s best friend.
In a 1985 MTV advertisement, Ribeiro played himself and promoted Alfonso’s Breakin’ & Poppin’ Book, a dance training book he wrote.
On Prism Records, he also put out four 12-inch singles, one of which was “Dancing Baby” in 1984.
Between September 1990 to May 1996, Ribeiro played Carlton Banks, the protagonist character’s cousin on the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
