Her stage name was Aaliyah (/???li??/), and she was an American recording artist, dancer, actress, and model who was born on January 16, 1979, in New York City, and died on August 25, 2001, in Los Angeles. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and reared in the Detroit, Michigan, area of the United States. She made her television debut at the age of ten, appearing on the programme Star Search and performing in concert with Gladys Knight, among other things.
Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records when she was 12 years old. During Hankerson’s introduction, she met R. Kelly, who went on to become both her mentor and the main composer and producer of her first album, Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number. The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America after selling three million copies in the United States (RIAA). Because of accusations that she had an unlawful marriage with R. Kelly, Aaliyah terminated her contract with Jive Records and secured a recording deal with Atlantic Records. When Aaliyah recorded her second studio album, One in a Million, she collaborated with record producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott. The album went on to sell 3.7 million copies in the United States and more than eight million copies worldwide. Aaliyah made her cinematic debut in the 2000 film Romeo Must Die, which was her first big role. Among her contributions to the soundtrack was the song “Try Again,” which was released as a single.
The song reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 purely as a result of radio exposure, becoming Aaliyah the first female artist in Billboard history to accomplish such a feat. Aaliyah was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocalist for her song “Try Again.” Following the completion of Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah shot her role in the horror thriller Queen of the Damned. Aaliyah was her third and last studio album, which was released in July 2001. Aaliyah and eight other people were murdered in an aircraft accident in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001, while shooting the music video for the song “Rock the Boat.”
