Known professionally as Zico ([?ziku]), Arthur Antunes Coimbra (Portuguese pronunciation: [a??tu????tnis ko??b?? ], born 3 March 1953 in Rio de Janeiro, is a Brazilian football coach and former player. He is often referred to as the “White Pelé” and is widely regarded as one of the most proficient finishers and one of the greatest passes in the history of the game, as well as perhaps the best player in the world during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He is also regarded as one of the greatest playmakers and free kick specialists in the world, having the ability to bend the ball in any direction at breakneck speed.
In 1999, Zico finished ninth in the FIFA Player of the Century voting by the FIFA Grand Jury. At a FIFA awards event in 2004, he was named one of the 125 best living players, a distinction he has held since. In the words of Pelé, who is widely regarded as the greatest footballer who ever lived, “throughout the years, the one player who came closest to me was Zico.” Zico has scored 48 goals in 71 official appearances for Brazil, placing him in fourth place all-time among the country’s top scorers. He represented them in the World Cups in 1978, 1982, and 1986, among other tournaments. Despite the fact that the 1982 team is widely regarded as one of the best Brazilian national squads in history, they failed to win any of those events. Zico is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, despite the fact that he has never been a member of a World Cup-winning team. He was named Player of the Year in 1981 and 1983, respectively. Coach Zico has previously worked with the Japanese national team, who competed in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and won the Asian Cup in 2004. He has also worked with Fenerbahçe, who reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League in 2007–08 under his guidance. CSKA Moscow announced in January 2009 that he had been appointed as the club’s head coach. After the club’s former coach, Temuri Ketsbaia, was fired on September 16, 2009, Zico was hired to a two-year deal by the Greek team Olympiacos. On the 19th of January 2010, he was dismissed four months after he was hired.
