Palani appeared before Judge Sandra Murphy, where his lawyer, while in custody, Gerry McGovern demanded a “urgent” mental evaluation and to be placed on suicide watch.
After a big crowd lined the streets between Sligo Garda Station and the courthouse, he was taken to court in the back of a garda van. Palani has been remanded in detention and will return to court on April 21 via video connection.
Michael Snee, 58, was discovered dead in his Sligo townhome on Tuesday night, while Aidan Moffitt, 42, was found dead on Monday night.
The accused was charged with a third count of assaulting Mr. Anthony Burke on Cleveragh Road on Saturday, April 9.
In a solemn courtroom, the accused sat with his hands clenched as the allegations were read out, dressed in a grey tracksuit, black runners, and sporting a beard. There was no request for bail.
His defending lawyer requested that the accused be evaluated by a psychiatrist from the Prison Service or transported to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum.
Judge Murphy approved his request and ordered that the accused be provided all required medical treatment.
According to the court, Palani was granted legal aid since he was unemployed and unable to cope with the charges without it.
