Yik Yak is a social media smartphone application that was launched in 2013. It is available for iOS and allows people to create and view discussion threads within a 5-mile radius.
The app was launched as a way to connect college students, but keeping users anonymous opened the door for bullying and harassment.
Several schools banned the app, which would eventually lead to a plunge in popularity over time. The app shut down in 2017.
After a four-year hiatus, Yik Yak is back. Yik Yak returned to the iOS App Store on Monday under new ownership, inspiring a fresh round of interest in the long-dead social network.
