Yakov Smirnoff Net Worth, Income, Salary, Earnings, Biography

Yakov Naumovich Pokhis, better known by his stage name Yakov Smirnoff, was born on January 24, 1951, in Moscow, Soviet Union, and is an American comedian, actor, and writer. A stand-up comedian, Smirnoff started performing in the United States in 1977, shortly after immigrating from Russia. He gradually acquired notoriety, and he had his greatest success in the mid-to-late 1980s, during which time he also starred in a number of films and television programmes, including his own comedy, What a Country!, which ran from 1986 to 1987.

His comedic character was that of a naïve Soviet immigrant who was constantly perplexed and thrilled by life in the United States, yet he was born in the Soviet Union. In addition to making fun of life under Communism and consumerism in the United States, he utilised word play to illustrate his misinterpretation of American words and culture, all punctuated with the slogan “And I thought, ‘What a nation!'” Smirnoff’s enormous popularity came to an end with the downfall of Communism, which began in 1989 and culminated in the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, but he continued to perform. When he moved to Branson, Missouri, he purchased his own theatre, where he still performs and presents shows today.

Having gone through his own divorce, he decided to revamp his stand-up act in the late 1990s to concentrate on the differences between men and women, as well as on how to solve issues within partnerships. As well as being a professor at Missouri State University and Drury University, Smirnoff is the author of the textbook “The Business of Laughter.” He is also a painter in his spare time.
