Xiu Li Hawken was born in Harbin, China, and earned a degree in Chinese literature from Heilongjiang University. She and her brother built a sizable fortune by leasing out underground air-raid shelters as retail space, through their company, Renhe Commercial Holdings. The spaces are now a popular network of underground shopping malls. She relocated to London in the early 90s, where she worked as a journalist, and then began a career in finance.
