Sherwin David Harris sometimes referred to as “Wood” Harris is an American actor born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 17, 1969. He became well-known for his portrayal of Motaw in the 1994 Jeff Pollack film Over the Rim.
He then portrayed Jimi Hendrix in the 2000 Showtime TV movie Hendrix and high school football player Julius Campbell in the Walt Disney Pictures films Remember the Titans and Hendrix.
Harris gained even more notoriety for his portrayal of drug lord Avon Barksdale in the HBO crime thriller The Wire, which aired from 2002 to 2008. Moreover, he portrayed Ace, a cocaine dealer, in the 2002 crime movie Paid in Full.
His pals gave him the moniker “Wood” because his real name, Sherwin, was difficult for some people to pronounce. Steve Harris, Harris’s older brother, is also an actor. Harris produced his debut album, Lovely Wonderful, which was scheduled to be published in 2005 in addition to his acting profession. Uncertainty surrounds the album’s possible release.
Harris played Nate “Sweetwater” Clifton in the movie Sweetwater, which is about the first black NBA player. The film’s director, Martin Guigui, revealed the cast in June 2008, but as of March 2018, preproduction was still ongoing.
In the 2009 movie Just Another Day, Harris portrayed A-maze, a popular fictitious rapper. Jamie Hector plays the younger, up-and-coming rapper, and Harris plays the older, established rapper at the height of his career in the movie, which centers on their rivalry.
Harris and Hector collaborated on the television series The Wire, where Hector played Marlo Stanfield, a character who shared a bond with Harris’s Avon Barksdale.
2012’s ESPN 30 for 30 films Benji featured Harris as the narrator. In the same year, he co-starred with Blair Underwood, Nicole Ari Parker, and Daphne Rubin-Vega in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway in the role of Harold “Mitch” Mitchell.
With Creed, the most recent entry in the Rocky franchise, Harris reconnected with Michael B. Jordan, a cast member from The Wire. In the movie’s sequel, he also played the same part.
