Klitschko’s career began in the slightly different field of kickboxing, where he competed as an amateur and a professional before switching to boxing. In 1995, Klitschko won the super heavyweight championship at the World Military Games in Italy. That same year, he took the silver medal at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Berlin. Since then, Klitschko’s career in boxing has been steadily on the rise, most recently defending his heavyweight WBC title against Tomasz Adamek, winning by technical knockout. Outside of the world of boxing, Klitschko is a practitioner of the deceptively intellectual pursuit of chess, along with his brother. Vitali has drawn a comparison between boxing and chess, given that both pursuits involve heavy strategizing between two opponents. He also has a small political career, running for mayor of the Ukrainian city of Kiev, but lost. Since that loss, he actually has been elected to several offices, most recently as leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform.
