Career

Wilson Ramos is known to have started with the Major League Baseball (MLB), Minnesota Twins in 2004. Not much is known about his career in the Venezuelan baseball league, but we do know that he played for the Tigres de Aragua . He signed with the Twins as a free agent in 2004, but will make his MLB debut in 2010. He spent six years in the minor league for teams including Fort Myers Miracle, the New Britain Rock Cats and Rochester’s Rock Wings. In the minor league, Ramos had an impressive run with 43% potential steals with a .987 save percentage. He also won the Florida State League and was awarded the Twins’ third-best prospect in 2009. On injury to Joe Mauer, Ramos made his MLB debut on May 1, 2010 and had four hits to set a record. He became the first Twins player to manage four debut hits since Kirby Puckett in 1984.

However, his performances weren’t enough to keep him as the first pick with Mauer returning from injury, he lost the spot and moved up to the minor league and became part of a trade deal between the Minnesota Twins and the Washington Nationals on July 29, 2010. The Nationals were hurt but he still managed to put up some impressive numbers. He spent six seasons with them and won the National League’s Silver Slugger Award in 2016. He signed a two-year contract in December 2016 with MLB team the Tampa Bay Rays. The transaction would amount to 12.5 million dollars.

Why was Wison Ramos kidnapped?

An incident occurred on November 9, 2011, which shocked the entire baseball world and, by extension, all sports fans around the world as Wilson Ramos was abducted from his home (his mother’s house) in Valencia, Venezuela. It was reported that four armed men stormed his mother’s residence, where the principal lier also stayed and took him away, just ahead of his other family members (father, brother and cousin) with a Chevrolet Captivated. His face was covered with a black cloth as he sat in the back of the sports utility vehicle (SUV).

Ramos, who has just returned to his homeland as the MLB season had just ended so he can continue playing with his local team, the Tigres de Aragua, as he maintains his fitness for the following season. was taken to a mountainous region near the town of Montalban in central Venezuela, with the aim of exchanging him for a huge cash ransom.

He was rescued two days after his abduction and his captors – about eight people involved in the operation – were arrested, including a 74-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman who were supplying the kidnappers with food. The building where he was held prisoner was raided and after a series of gunfire between the kidnappers and the Venezuelan commandos which lasted about fifteen minutes, he was once again a free man. Ramos was fine, with no physical injuries at the time of his rescue and was reportedly fed by his captors.

The incident with Wilson Ramos was not the first kidnappings in the area but it was the first of its kind. Previously, family members of baseball players were usually the targets of such heinous acts. However, Ramos’ kidnapping was the first time an MLB player has been kidnapped for ransom in the country. The issue of kidnappings was a recurring problem and as such the biggest players in MLB pay for their personal security and hire thugs who follow them wherever they go.

For Ramos, he had just finished his rookie year as an MLB member and hadn’t made enough money for personal security at the time. According to the kidnappers, the kidnapping would have been “for a ton of money”, which they later told Ramos while in their custody would cost around $400,000.
