Mrs. Wilnelia Merced, Lady Forsyth-Johnson (born October 12, 1957 in Caguas, Puerto Rico), better known by her maiden name of Wilnelia Merced, became the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico’s first and, to this day, only Miss World winner in 1975, becoming the island’s first and, to this day, only winner of the Miss World title. During her first year in office, she travelled extensively, and the administration of El Salvador sent her an invitation to visit the nation before the civil conflict. In England, she fell in love with the country, which she would eventually choose as her permanent residence. She is presently the youngest woman to have won Miss World, having done so at the age of 18 years and 39 days. She was signed by Ford Models in New York in 1976, a year after she had given up her throne. In 1978, a large billboard of her was placed in Times Square, and she was presented to British television comedian Bruce Forsyth during the Miss World competition banquet in London in 1980, when she won the title of Miss World. In 1983, Merced and Forsyth tied the knot. She resigned as a model following her wedding while remaining a well-known public personality in her native Puerto Rico. In 1986, they became parents to a boy.
She established a foundation to assist Puerto Rico’s underprivileged children, and she organises charity balls to raise funds for it. Merced now resides on the Wentworth Estate in Surrey, England, with her husband and their son, Jonathan Joseph, who is also an actor. During one of her trips to Puerto Rico in 2002, her house was broken into by burglars, who were responsible for the injury of one of her maids. In June 2011, it was announced that her husband, Bruce Forsyth, would be awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the Bath. Because of this, Wilnelia is allowed to use the courtesy title of Lady Forsyth when appropriate.
