William Éric Gallas (French pronunciation:?[wiljam?alas]; born August 17, 1977) is a French footballer who currently plays for A-League club Perth Glory in the Australian Football League. Gallas started his professional career with a French team before being recruited by English club Chelsea the following year. In 2006, he was traded to rivals Arsenal as part of a three-way swap deal with Chelsea. In 2010, he signed a contract with Tottenham Hotspur. While his career has been fruitful, culminating in Premier League championships in 2005 and 2006, he has also been the subject of controversy owing to his on-field behaviour and clashes with other members of the team. While appointed Arsenal captain in 2007, he was relieved of the position during the 2008–09 season after publicly criticising his teammates in a media interview. The contract of Gallas with Arsenal ended at the conclusion of the 2009–10 season, and he was forced to leave the club. Gallas has joined rivals Tottenham Hotspur on a one-year deal. When his contract with the team ended at the conclusion of the 2012–13 season, he was released.
