New Disney Plus’ She-Hulk series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, dropped earlier this month. The series follows the story of lawyer Jennifer Walters, cousin of Bruce Banner, as she learns to live with her hulk-sized alter ego.
The series trailer left admirers disappointed and angry, as people began to argue that She-Hulk’s physique and overall build were too small to represent the character accurately.
After the release of the teaser, Sean Ruecroft, one of the VFX team members who worked with MCU in the past, took to Twitter to explain why the character looked less hulky than she should have.
According to the VFX artist, She-Hulk was more prominent in size early on, but the notes of MCU demanding to make her smaller, the VFX artist team made her more smallish. However, the VFX artist does roll their eyes, but at the end of the day, the artist has to follow the director’s orders.
The Real Reason Why She-Hulk Is So Small
If one is to compare She-Hulk with the actual Hulk, She-Hulk is tiny compared to the original Hulk. She-Hulk is not as big as the Hulk, and admirers seem to be disappointed and angry after the decision of the MCU to keep the She-Hulk small.
Making She-Hulk smaller in size was an intentional move by Marvel. An odd choice, considering her comic version and the outcry that admirers have expressed at a smaller Jenifer Walters.
She-Hulk being small has to do with her intensity of exposure to gamma radiation. Unlike her cousin, she received a blood transfusion from Hulk and did not receive tons of gamma radiation.
And hence, She-Hulk’s transformation is undersized compared to Bruce Banner and allows her to remain well-proportioned. And as she was exposed to the considerably low intensity of gamma radiation compared to Hulk, MCU decided to make She-Hulk look noticeably different and small in size from the Hulk.
And as Jennifer has less gamma exposure, she possesses more control over her Hulk transformation and emotional intelligence. Unlike Bruce, who has a tough time controlling his Hulk and took years to preside over his Hulk by transforming it into Smart Hulk.
How Does She-Hulk Get Her Powers?
Attorney Jennifer Walers (portrayed by Tatiana Maslany) got her Hulk power after the transfusion of her blood with the blood of her cousin, Bruce Banner (the Hulk). Unfortunately, after the blood transfusion containing the necessary cells for Hulk transformation, she was exposed to gamma radiation, which gave her the powers.
The process transformed her into the green monster, gaining her the powers of She-Hulk. However, the MCU presents the story of Jennifer a little bit differently from the comics. In the MCU adaptation, She-Hulk has to adjust to an entirely new life as she balances her attorney career and newfound power that earned her place as the world’s latest superhero.
As the series evolves, we will learn more details about the newfound superhero. The story will reveal She-Hulk acceptance of herself, and life will be what drives her forward to new heights.
Comparison With The Hulk: Is She-Hulk Stronger Than Hulk?
In the first episodes of Attorney at Law, She-Hulk appears several steps ahead of the Hulk, to the point where she’s arguably stronger than Hulk, Bruce Banner. However, during the training session with Bruce Banner (the Hulk), Jessica effortlessly outdoes him.
Also, during their fights, she frequently gains the upper hand against the Hulk. Finally, Hulk knocks off her feet at one pivotal moment with his iconic Thunderclap.
After the attack, she quickly manages to pull off an even more robust version of her Thunderclap. The fight ends with neither Hulk nor She-Hulk properly getting the better of the other.
The series infers that She-Hulk matches Hulk’s strength despite her having spent less time compared to Hulk. In the MCU version, Hulk’s power was considerably reduced from his comic portrayal. In the comic version, She-hulk herself states that Banner’s Hulk is stronger than her.
In World War Hulk#1, Jennifer mentions that Hulk smashes about a thousand times harder than her. Despite having received a substantial power increase during the comic run, her cousin easily beat her in Immortal Hulk.
